The supreme deity of Esoteric Buddhism is not Shakyamuni, but Mahavairocana Buddha, known in Sanskrit as Mahāvairocana. He is also called Vairocana Buddha or the Great Sun Illuminating All.
The principal deity, Mahavairocana Buddha, occupies the center of the painting, depicted with four faces. His hair is gathered into a high topknot adorned with a five-petaled crown. The central face bears a solemn expression, while the other faces display varying emotions—some joyful, some wrathful. His upper body is robust and adorned with various ornaments, his hands forming the mudra of meditation before his abdomen. He wears a loose, flowing robe, seated in the lotus position upon a lotus throne.
