Shakyamuni, also known as Gautama and Siddhartha, was an ancient Indian thinker, educator, religious reformer, and founder of Buddhism. His titles include Shakyamuni, Gautama Buddha, and Buddha (meaning "the enlightened one").
It is said that after six years of asceticism, Shakyamuni achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Mara, a demon whose power was broken by this enlightenment, transformed into an army of demons. They attacked him with various weapons, as well as fire, water, and poisonous flames. However, the flames could not touch Shakyamuni's body and instead formed a halo around him. Mara then sent three naked temptresses to seduce Shakyamuni with their beauty, but through his power, Shakyamuni transformed them into ugly old crones.
Therefore, Shakyamuni summoned the earth gods to bear witness and subdued the demon king. Therefore, the statue of Shakyamuni's enlightenment shows him seated cross-legged on a lotus throne, his left hand placed on his feet or holding an alms bowl (called the "Dhyana Mudra," signifying meditation). His right hand pointed vertically to the ground (called the "Dhyana Mudra"), signifying Shakyamuni's sacrifice of everything for the liberation of all beings. These were all deeds performed on earth, and only the earth can bear witness.
