Guanyin Great Bodhisattva is a Bodhisattva in Buddhism. His name is a translation of the Sanskrit word 'Avalokiteśvara,' also translated as 'Guangshiyin' (Light of the World's Sounds), and the newer translations 'Guanzizai' (Perceiver of All) or 'Guanshizizai' (Sovereign Perceiver of the World's Sounds). His transliterated names are 'Apolujidisheboluo' or 'Awulujiduo Yishifaluo.' He is the left attendant of Amitabha Buddha and one of the \"Three Sages of the West.
Buddhism holds that Guanyin Bodhisattva is a Bodhisattva of great compassion. It is believed that suffering beings only need to chant his name, and the \"Bodhisattva will immediately perceive their voices\" and go to save and liberate them, hence the name. The character 'Shi' (世, meaning 'world') was omitted from his name during the Tang Dynasty to avoid a naming taboo of Emperor Taizong, Li Shimin, leading to the shortened name 'Guanyin.'"
