The “Buddha of Longevity” is the abbreviated name for “The Holy Buddha of Boundless Life and Wisdom, the Sovereign of Decisive Light” in Tibetan Buddhism, also known simply as “The Buddha of Boundless Life and Wisdom.”
In Tibetan Buddhist iconography, he is depicted as a one-faced, two-armed figure with red skin. His hair is coiled into a topknot adorned with a five-buddha crown. He wears celestial robes above and a silk skirt below, adorned with jeweled ornaments, embodying all the majestic attributes of a Sambhogakaya Buddha. His hands form the meditation mudra upon his knees, holding a longevity vase. His feet rest in the vajra cross-legged posture upon a lotus moon disc.
In Tibetan Buddhism, Amitayus, Mahasthamaprapta, and White Tara are revered as symbols of blessings, longevity, and auspiciousness, collectively known as the “Three Deities of Longevity.”
The special virtue of the Buddha of Infinite Life and Wisdom and his sutra and mantra lies in their ability to eliminate the calamity of premature death and extend one's lifespan.
The sutra states: Those who pay homage, transcribe, make proper offerings to, and uphold this Sutra of the Tathagata of Infinite Life, Definitive Light, and His Dharani shall overcome the calamity of premature death. Their lifespan shall be extended to a full hundred years. Upon death, they shall be reborn in the Pure Land of the Tathagata of Infinite Life, Definitive Light—the World Treasury of Infinite Merits (though they may also be reborn in any other Pure Land of their choice according to their vows). There they shall constantly study the Buddha's teachings and swiftly attain enlightenment.
